Ingrown Toenails

Service Overview

An ingrown toenail occurs when a portion of the nail plate, typically a sharp spicule, grows deep down the side of the nail. This puts pressure on the surrounding skin, leading to pain, inflammation, and potential infection. There are several common causes of ingrown toenails, including wide nail plates, incorrect nail cutting, tight footwear, or skin growing over the nail plate.

To resolve an ingrown toenail, a podiatrist will gently remove the portion of the nail that is causing the problem, including the spicule responsible for the ingrown toenail. This helps alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and prevent infection. The podiatrist will then appropriately cover the toe and provide guidance on aftercare. They will schedule a follow-up appointment within one to two weeks to monitor the healing progress and ensure the nail is growing straight.

Consulting a podiatrist

If there are signs of infection, the podiatrist may recommend seeing a regular general practitioner (GP) for a course of antibiotics. This is done to address the infection and promote proper healing.

In cases where the ingrown toenail continues to occur, the podiatrist can discuss potential permanent solutions with you. These may involve procedures such as partial or full nail avulsion or other corrective measures to prevent future ingrown toenails.

It’s crucial to address ingrown toenails promptly to alleviate pain, prevent complications, and promote proper healing. Consulting a podiatrist is recommended for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Ingrown Toenail Treatments

At Port Stephens Podiatry we can employ a range of treatment approaches to effectively manage Ingrown Toenails. Here are some examples of how our podiatrists may help you treat this condition:

Conservative Care

Our podiatrists provide gentle and conservative treatments for mild cases of ingrown toenails. This includes soaking the foot in warm water, carefully lifting of the ingrown nail edge using cotton or dental floss, and application of antibiotic ointment to prevent infection.

Partial Nail Avulsion

In more severe or recurrent cases, our podiatrists perform partial nail avulsion. This minor surgical procedure is done under local anesthesia. Our skilled team will carefully remove the ingrown portion of the nail, ensuring your comfort and safety throughout the procedure. We may use advanced techniques such as chemical cauterization to prevent the regrowth of the ingrown nail edge.

Full Nail Avulsion

In rare instances where chronic or severe ingrown toenails are present, our podiatrists may recommend full nail avulsion. This procedure involves the complete removal of the nail under local anesthesia. Rest assured, our team will take every precaution to ensure proper healing and provide guidance on post-procedure care.
By combining these treatment approaches, Port Stephens Podiatry’s team can effectively manage ingrown toenails, reduce pain, promote healing, and help our patients regain their mobility and quality of life.
