Service Overview

Plantar warts are rough, grainy growths that appear on the soles of the feet or toes. They are caused by a viral infection called human papillomavirus (HPV) and can cause discomfort or pain, particularly when walking or standing. These warts may have a thickened, callus-like skin over them and can vary in size. Treatment options include over-the-counter medications, freezing, laser therapy, or surgical removal. It is important to prevent their spread by avoiding direct contact and practicing good foot hygiene.

Our podiatrists offer valuable assistance in dealing with plantar warts. They accurately diagnose the condition and devise tailored treatment plans based on your needs and activities. They remove calluses above the warts to optimize the effectiveness of topical treatments. Our podiatrists skillfully apply medications like salicylic acid, nitric acid or silver nitrate directly to warts. We also perform wart needling under local anesthesia, a highly successful treatment option for more stubborn cases. They also provide temporary padding for footwear to alleviate pressure and reduce pain. With their expertise, our podiatrists play a crucial role in managing plantar warts and promoting overall foot health.

Plantar Wart Treatment

At Port Stephens Podiatry we can employ a range of treatment approaches to effectively manage Plantar Warts. Here are some examples of how our podiatrists may help you treat this condition:

Salicylic Acid

Our podiatrists often use high concentration salicylic acid preparations. Applied directly to the wart Salicylic acid gradually removes layers of the wart, allowing healthy skin to regenerate. Following the provided instructions is important, and please be patient as it may take several weeks for the wart to disappear.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a widely used treatment for plantar warts. During this procedure, our podiatrists apply liquid nitrogen directly to the wart, freezing the affected tissue. The freezing process destroys the wart, and as the area heals, healthy skin replaces it. Multiple cryotherapy sessions may be necessary for complete wart removal.

Wart Needling

In some cases, our experienced podiatrists may recommend Falknor’s Needling technique for larger or more persistent plantar warts. Using hollow needle the wart is repeatedly penetrated to the base of the wart. By stimulating your body's immune response, this very successful treatment helps combat the wart from within. This needling is performed under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. By stimulating your body's immune response, immunotherapy helps combat the wart from within.

Wart Curettage

In rare cases where other treatments have been unsuccessful or if the wart is causing significant pain, our skilled podiatrists may recommend curettage. Under local anesthesia, the wart is surgically removed, allowing for faster healing and relief.
By combining these treatment approaches, Port Stephens Podiatry’s team can effectively manage Plantar Warts, reduce pain, promote healing, and help our patients regain their mobility and quality of life.
